World renowned for its myriad of underwater life, the Sea of Cortez is considered one of the eight best dive locations in the world. San Carlos, our gateway to the Sea of Cortez, is an easy five hour drive by four-lane highway. Alternatively, a 1-hour flight, or a leisurely drive or bus ride from Tucson, and provides a safe, convenient and inexpensive way to explore this vast marine menagerie. In an afternoon, it is possible to see rowdy sea lions, playful dolphins, breaching whales, sea horses, bright nudibranchs, morays, and vivid angelfish.
The Ocean Spirit
Desert Divers is proud to be the only facility in Tucson to offer exclusive use of its own boat, the Ocean Spirit. Brand new in the summer of 2000, the Ocean Spirit allows us to access many of the fabulous dive sites in the Sea of Cortez attainable only by boat. The Ocean Spirit is a 46’ twin diesel powered vessel. She seats 36 divers and has an ample sun deck. The Ocean Spirit offers the very best in speed and comfort with the ability to reach dive sites in half the time of any other charter operator in San Carlos. This allows us to visit multiple dive sites during our day trips and offer the luxury of night diving. In addition the boat provides easy access areas for water entries and exits, tanks, weights, and fresh water showers. Snacks and beverages are provided between dives on all trips. The Ocean Spirit meets all U.S. Coast Guard safety standards and carries oxygen on board.
Sunset cruises and more
In the evening you can take a sunset cruise of the bay. This fun-filled voyage is just the thing to unwind – you’ll enjoy snacks, beverages, and music and good company on this two-hour pleasure trip. Stay an extra day (or more!) and enjoy a whole range of other activities that are available year-round. San Carlos offers adventures for your entire family- Jet-skis, sea kayaking, sailing, horseback riding, ATV’s, or pile the whole family onto a banana and go for a wild ride.
